TeamUp International

More than 80 million people worldwide are fleeing war, violence and persecution. Half of these are children. They are often exposed to oppression, loss and anxiety. This has a negative impact on the development and well-being of children. In the new country of arrival they have to deal with new stress factors; can we stay? Am I making friends here? Isn't the language too difficult to learn? Many children have become afraid and insecure, silent and withdrawn or aggressive. In general, they find it difficult to trust people.

In order to socially and emotionally support refugee children with sports and play activities, WarChild, UNICEF Netherlands and Save the Children have combined their experience and expertise in the TeamUp programme. Initially mainly for refugee children in the Netherlands, but also in more and more countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America.

Social emotional themes
TeamUp offers structured sports, games and exercise activities, so that children from 6 to 18 years old learn how to deal with their feelings. The skills they gain from us are linked to social-emotional themes. They come in handy in their daily lives.

The activities

  • Contribute to stability and structure for children and ensure that children can be children again;

  • Reduce the chance that children will develop further psychosocial problems in the long term;

  • Ensure that children who need more social-emotional support are identified and referred to the appropriate agency;

  • Ensure that children's resilience is strengthened so that they learn to better deal with stress factors such as bullying, anger and fear.
